Out on the Serengeti plains

Make time for the plains.

The Serengeti opens out into grassland, rocky kopjes and pockets of woodland. Wildebeest and zebra move through the landscape, while lions and other predators follow their own daily rhythms.

The Great Migration is part of the story, but there is plenty to notice between the big moments. Give yourself time to stop, look and let the day unfold.

Wildlife drives

Look for lions, giraffes, zebra and the smaller details along the way.

Room to explore

Move between open plains, rocky outcrops and river landscapes.

The Great Migration

Plan your stay around the area the herds are likely to be using.

Then choose the area.

What you want to see helps shape where you stay. Start with your dates and build the route from there.

Dry season safari days

The drier months are a useful starting point for wildlife viewing. For a migration safari, match your camp to the herds’ likely location. The northern Serengeti is often a focus later in this period.

Herd movements depend on rainfall. River crossings are never guaranteed.

Before you go

How long should I stay?

Allow a few nights if your itinerary permits. Distances between areas can be substantial, so the right length depends on your camp, travel dates and how much time you want on game drives.

Can I combine it with other parks?

Yes. Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara can be considered as part of a northern Tanzania safari. The order and number of stops should fit the time you have.
